From staff reports

Sister Helen Prejean, the Louisiana nun who became one of the country's most prominent critics of the death penalty, will receive the 2008 World Methodist Peace Award in a ceremony Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Rayne Memorial Methodist Church in New Orleans.

Prejean will be honored "for her efforts at reconciliation and peace, and for bringing to the public's awareness issues regarding incarceration and death row," said the Rev. George Freeman, general secretary of the World Methodist Council.

The award's previous winners include President Carter, Nelson Mandela and Habitat for Humanity.

Prejean, who published "Dead Man Walking" in 1993, is the author most recently of "Death of Innocents: An Eyewitness Account of Wrongful Executions."

The World Methodist Council is a worldwide association of 74 churches in 132 countries living in the Methodist tradition.
